Notes from the Final Holiday Rush Webinar – Running A Holiday Sale

Here are the notes from the final webinar in the Holiday rush series.

I have run sales in my Etsy shop that have been successful and some that did not go over well.   During the holiday season shoppers are looking for sales, deals, and discounts.  I did some research with Google Insights, and found out what sale keywords are being searched during the holiday shopping season.

So you are running a sale in your Etsy shop this holiday season?   That is great, but how do you get people to see your sale?

The best place to start is Facebook.    Head over to your Facebook Fan Page and look for your Events application.  Everyone should have this already installed when  you start your fan page.   Sometimes the events app can be hidden in your tabs.  It is is click the arrow button and it will pop up.

Once you click the event tab you will see a button to create a new event.   There are a few important things to fill out here.

Running an etsy sale

First is the photo.   You are allowed just like your fan page a 200 by 600 photo here.  The one I designed was 190 by 500.  You want your picture to tell the whole story of your event, but not look to cluttered.   You also want to keep in mind what your thumbnail will look like.    The top half of your picture will show as your thumb for the event on walls of profiles and pages.

How to promote an Etsy Sale

Next you want to set your date that your sale/event is going to run.     I suggest that you think of running a shop wide sale so you can just provide a coupon code.  This will make things easier when you are ready to promote.

Now you can set the name of your sale/event and tell everyone about it in the more info box.  You are able to add links to anything in the More Info box.  All of this can be edited later.

If you are going to run a giveaway like I did you want to make sure you allow attenders to leave links.

Here is where you are going to want to pick who you are inviting to your sale/event.  You can do this now or wait.

Promoting an etsy sale on facebook

When you are ready to invite your friends it is always good to include a personal message about what you are inviting them to.  You always want to add the message here.  Leaving it blank will make you seem impersonal.

Now you are ready to launch your event.  Once you do a post about your event will automatically show up on your fan page wall.   Notice the thumbnail of the event.  Now your fans can comment, like, share, and even invite their own friends to attend the event.  This is what makes Facebook such a great place to promote your Etsy sale.

You can also share your event on your personal profile ,any group, your page, or a friends wall.  Just click the share button.

So now your Facebook even it up and running along with your Etsy shop sale (with your coupon code).  Lets head over to Etsy.

First you want to start a Etsy forum thread about your sale event.

Make sure you are using the same title as your event on Facebook.  You want everything to line up keyword wise, so Google Will like everything!   Next you want to include a link to your Facebook event.   You will want to keep this thread alive as much as possible, but don’t waste to much time. Come back and post links to your items… and give updates on any event happenings.

So now you have created a link that you can now share in your shop announcement that will be clickable.   You will want to talk about your sale and link to the Etsy thread there your shoppers can learn more about your event.

Blogging time.

Write a post about your sale and your event.  Use the same title again and link to your event and Etsy shop.

Tips For Making Your etsy Sale Visible

Last but certainly  not least, be sure to tweet about your event and sale on Twitter!

With every step make sure you are  interacting with the attenders, friends, followers, and commenters.   People are not going to spend the time to visit your shop if you are not present.  This will take time out of your day, but it is worth it.

What type of sales are going to be successful this year?

I have run sales in my Etsy shop that have been successful and some that did not go over well.   During the holiday season shoppers are looking for sales, deals, and discounts.  I did some research with Google Insights, and found out what sale keywords are being searched during the holiday shopping season.

Holiday Sale

In the graph below you can see that every year during December the search numbers for the key phrase “holiday sale” go up.  It is forecasted for 2011 to follow the same trend.

In the chart below you will see a number of keywords that Google sees as rising searches for 2011 that are closly related to “holiday sale”.

Holiday Free Shipping

Jewelry Sale

% Off  Sale

These are just a few sale ideas.  Lets dig a bit further into one of these sale keywords:

Head over to the Google Keyword Tool, and search your keyword.  I am looking at “holiday free shipping”.

This keyword is searched 1,900 times per month.  Not a ton but the Competing pages are lower, so your chances of getting noticed on Google for this key phrase is good.G

Good luck with your holiday sales!
